The current St. Michael’s Chapel
was built in 1882 near Bigelow Gulch Road. It served as a
meeting house, school, church, and even a family dwelling as the
Indian and white settler population shifted through the years.
Shortly after 1893, St. Michael’s was established as an adjunct
to Gonzaga College. The chapel was declared a Historic Monument
in 1937, and was closed in 1943. Neglect, isolation, weather,
and vandalism nearly destroyed the historic building. To ensure
its safety, in 1968 the Mission chapel was moved by Gonzaga
University to its present site on Fort Wright campus. The
chapel remains a tribute to those who used it to serve others.
